Join us on Saturday 10 November for a special conference exploring recent research relating to the Bronze Age timber circle: Seahenge 2018.

In the summer of 1998 the shifting sands on the west Norfolk coast revealed something extraordinary on the beach at Holme-next-the-sea, three miles from the seaside resort of Hunstanton. Jutting out of the sand were 55 oak posts, creating a circle 6.6m in diameter. At the centre of the circle was a great upturned tree stump, its roots exposed to the air. Research would reveal that these timbers were a rare survivor from the Early Bronze Age, dating back over 4,000 years. It quickly became known as ‘Seahenge’.

Ten years later, a permanent exhibition featuring preserved timbers was opened at Lynn Museum.

To celebrate this double anniversary, Professor Francis Pryor, the archaeologist famous for his numerous appearances on Channel 4’s Time Team programme, will open this special conference within King’s Lynn.

Ticket holders will have access to events taking place at two venues on Saturday 10th November. Keynote speakers will present talks at Marriott’s Warehouse to cover a range of topics from the original discovery and excavation to current research relating to both Seahenge and its sister site ‘Holme II’ - discovered 100 meters to the east of Seahenge. At Lynn Museum there will be an opportunity to find out more about the display and interpretation of the timber circle and to meet John Lorimer, credited for bringing Seahenge to the attention of the academic community.

Tickets cost £10 and include a buffet lunch. The conference will begin at 10am (arrival from 9.30am) at Marriott’s Warehouse, South Quay, King’s Lynn, PE30 5DT.

Seahenge 2018 is part of the Coastal Treasures project, supported by the Coastal Communities Fund.
