Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune
Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin

Chanson Poème

Ravel Daphnis & Chloé Suite No.2

Warm sensual and intoxicating is Debussy’s wonderful Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. His music seems to float – it is clear that one thing is in no hurry to lead to another. As he said, “There is no theory…pleasure is the law”.

Ravel was the master craftsman. Le Tombeau de Couperin is a set of pieces, originally for piano, which Ravel wrote in memory of friends lost in the First World War. However, this is not tragic music but sweet and poignant.

French music in the late 19th Century was deeply influenced by Wagner. Ernest Chausson’s admiration, is very clear in his music, although it is lightened by a typically French sweetness and grace. Like so much of Chausson’s small musical output, Poème yearns and burns with an intense and poignant sensuality.

Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé returns us to the warmth and lustfulness of classical Greek antiquity. We shall be playing the Suite No.2, containing the most famous depiction of sunrise in all music. An extremely passionate seduction follows and we end with the wild and tumultuous Dense Générale.
