Wed 23 Jun - Sun 12 Sep Hedgerow Wild Flower Paintings by Barbara King

The evocative and colourful exhibition of Barbara King’s hedgerow flower paintings are on display at North Creake’s Abbey Café until 12th September.

The gallery setting at the café is a beautiful setting surrounded by wild countryside, sheep, birds and cattle. The café is now serving delicious pastries and cakes both indoors and out – the cafe is truly a peaceful place to relax, eat, drink and enjoy some bright and colourful paintings of local flora.

The paintings in the exhibition are inspired by flowers and grasses found in our local hedgerows, roadside verges, meadows and wasteland - which have been the artist’s preoccupation for a couple of years. They are the result of time spent studying, photographing and sketching the changing forms and colours of these plants, their simple and complex designs, their interaction with rain, sun and wind. Wild and native, thriving as intended in uncultivated land, these humble plants have been ascribed gloriously descriptive names such as Hawksbeard, Meadow Cranesbill, Rosebay Willowherb, Bird’s Foot Trefoil amongst others.

The artist’s fascination with the subject also led her into growing her own wild flowers from seed last year and documenting their progress from seedling to flower in my sketch book. This year the artist has been blessed with their offspring, which she has moved to her own wild flower patch in the front garden!
For most of the paintings Barbara King has used acrylic paint, enjoying its fast drying properties to create gestural and textural effects almost exclusively with the aid of palette knives and other mark making objects.

Barbara hopes you have the opportunity to visit this most charming place in the heart of the North Norfolk countryside and enjoy some of the cafe's delicious food. If you do get there, the artist would love to hear what you think of her new paintings.
