PURCELL Five Fantasias

BRITTEN String Quartet No.1 in D Op.25

BEETHOVEN String Quartet in B flat Op.130 with Grosse Fuge

The Doric String Quartet, such an important part of the North Norfolk Music Festival history, have two concerts this year following performances in leading concert halls throughout Europe including Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Vienna Konzerthaus, Frankfurt Alte Oper, Hamburg Laeiszhalle and De Singel, Antwerp, and of course their regular visits to Wigmore Hall where they will open the 2018/19 season in September.

Britten famously used Purcell as a source of inspiration; to go from Purcell Fantasias in quartet arrangement to Britten’s first quartet will be a natural progression. Written in the USA in 1941, Britten’s first quartet opens in a unique ethereality; the work reflects his own emotional turmoil living so far away from home during WWII. The concert will close with a great and rare opportunity to hear the Dorics in Beethoven’s B flat quartet, and with its original Grosse fuge finale.
