Benjamin Britten and The Bells of the Feast of Santa Maria della Salute - a talk by art historian CHARLIE HALL

The bells of Santa Maria della Salute ring out on just one day each year – on the 21 November (the day before Britten’s birthday, Santa Cecilia day) – in gratitude to the Virgin for helping to protect the Republic from the plague: between 75,000 and 100,000 died but the toll could have been much higher. In late November 1975, the year before he died, Benjamin Britten was staying at the Hotel Danieli, and it was from his hotel room that he heard the pattern of the bells which pervades so emotively the atmosphere of the quartet’s Passacaglia – La Serenissima.
