JAMES NEWBY baritone GARY MATTHEWMAN piano

SCHUBERT Die Scho¨ne Mu¨llerin Op.25 D979

Schubert’s great song cycle, together with the composer’s Winterreise, is considered to be at the pinnacle of a singer’s art.

Schubert set twenty poems by Wilhelm Mu¨ller (1794-1827) in which the adventures of a young man are described: his infatuation with the lovely miller’s daughter of the title, his disappointment when he discovers the girl already loves another, and his subsequent suicide in the brook that flows past the mill and in which he finds peace and constancy at last.

The British baritone James Newby studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in Greenwich. He was awarded the Kathleen Ferrier Award in 2016 and is currently a member of BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists Scheme. In 2017 he won the prestigious John Christie Award at Glyndebourne Festival Opera where, as Jerwood Young Artist, he took part in five operas. Highlights for this season include a tour of the St Matthew Passion with the Gabrieli Consort to Dublin, Wroclaw and Arnstadt, and performances and recitals at the Three Choirs Festival and The Athenaeum, London, and in Paris and Cincinatti.

Gary Matthewman took part in the very first NNMF concert in 2005 and has returned many times since. He has recently embarked on his new career as a conductor, making his debut at The Sage with Mark Padmore and Roderick Williams as soloists in Britten’s War Requiem.
